BMS & AR Demo Video
« on: January 17, 2024, 11:10:03 AM »
Authorized for release.

NOTE: BMS and HTO are a work in progress.  Recoding was done through Quest 3 thus game play is smoother than illustrated through the video.

The future is here!!

Jody, could you please post the link to youtube also, please?
The forum's youtube embedding doesn't work on most current browsers, so nothing is showing for me.

Nice!
How does the interaction with the cockpit feel through the lenses? Can you read instruments/DED etc fine?

Sorry, but for those who are still in the construction phase of the pit structure, are there any particular precautions to take to prepare for the mix between virtual reality and cockpit?

Imho, just build your dream pit, because that gives you way more joy, then the AR has to adapt to that, the tech is fast developing.

I'm using the Quest 3.  As for simpit preparation, not really..  I am using a real cockpit and there are some minor differences with the BMS 3D pit as it is not accurate, however as you can see in the video it is barely noticeable.  The best thing you can do is modify the AR mask and adjust it to your pit (within reason) but as you can see in my demo video with an accurate accurate dimensions the differences are minimal and not worth adjusting in my opinion.

I'm a little surprised that there is no recent discussions on Mixed Reality after it was released in the new 4.37 U4 version of BMS.
I think it's is a major game changer for pit builders.
I would think most of the users on this forum would be going crazy, now that they don't need screens and projectors anymore...

I have the Q3 already. Currently I have everything taken out of the sim for some upgrades. I am hoping to get it all back together and try out the AR in BMS.
Unfortunately for DCS you need Steam for AR and I don't have that.

Same here, was looking forward to seeing/reading more experiences on the subject here. My rig is not operational yet, but will most likely go the AR route.

Since my pit isn't flyable in the moment, I decided to wait until I'm close to flyable state and see what's state-of-the art at that moment.
Makes no sense investing in something now, which will be way outdated at the time I'm starting to use it.

Exactly, right now I'm glad I only invested in one projector, and not in a setup with 3 and curved screens, as I planned to do several years ago.

It' is awesome to have this capability now! The thing missing atm is the headset to do it. The only (at least a bit) viable option is the Quest3. Unfortunately, the headset can not deliver the quality I want in several aspects (resolution, clarity, passthrough quality) and spending around 500 eur just to fuzz around a bit in instant action is not the way to go for me.
I've seen Jodys vids and they are awesome, I'm happy it does work for him, but I also know from others who are not so pleased with the overall performance of the headset. I'm hoping for the VR1 of Somnium to arrive soon, maybe I'm going for this one then - if I can afford it :)
Best regards

I agree that this is an exciting development @jjbravo.

Hopefully chroma key (green screen) passthrough becomes available for the Quest headset in the near future.  That would make it more accessible IMHO, as you could use a partial pit combined with a virtual one, or achieve a better separation between the real pit and the virtual outside world.

Varjo uses this technique, as described here: https://varjo.com/blog/blend-real-and-virtual-seamlessly-with-new-xr-1-features/

They specifically refer to it's value in flight sims.

It will be long time until the passthrough cameras are as good as our eyes, so good pit lighting will be important for passthrough.  You'll need to light the pit for the way a camera sees it, not how it looks to your eyes.

I'm still doing a lot of work on the pit and waiting for new Bodnar boards so I've not flown in U4 yet.

However, I did try some other "solutions" in U3 using my Quest.  I had a significant performance hit to the point that I would turn off the MR when I didn't need it.  I'm keen to give U4 a try, but I will also have to make my own mask, which requires some Blender work.

As for the Quest 3, I have zero issues with it considering the price point, which is (depending on version) half or even less than half of the Pimax Crystal.  The passthrough is great.... could be better, but I guess we won't have that until Somnium comes out or someone is willing to shell out for the Varjo XR4s.  So again, for the price point, the Quest 3 passthrough is very good.

That's what I'm talking about, when I say "I'm going to wait".
To me it makes no sense investing in technology now, when I'm just going to use it in months or even years from now.
Technology improves in just an incredible pace at the moment.

What we can hope for, is that the Passthrough of the Q3 will improve over time.
Think most of the effort that has to be done, will have to happen on the software side. That means the firmware from Meta and / or Virtual Desktop (or other solutions).

Meta has just dropped Update 66 which should improve passthrough as to their statement.

I'll have yet to test that, as it's just been installed 10 minutes ago.

In the end, it'll always be trade-off and compromise.

I didn't do too much AR yet on my setup yet - only 20 minutes or so - and what I've experienced until now was as underwhelming as I've expected it to be - but, still the clear direction where things will be going.
I could say the same about VR, by the way. It's also not perfect and looking a bit PS3-ish und certain circumstances (depending on the Game, the Headset, the settings you can afford), but it still will not let you loose.
The same goes for BMS by the way: Not graphically perfect (by nature!) - but at the end of a 2-hour multiplayer mission you'll have been totally immersed!

@Marvin What VD passthrough settings do you use (Similarity and Smoothness)?

I would argue this.  They may just not be using it to its potential.  First thing is wireless is just horseshit.  To think you can run sims like we have and the graphics as wireless is pretty insane.  So running it wired has way more performance.  Further more using sufficient lighting makes the clarity just about 100%.  I installed two LED spot lights over my shoulders to both simulate natural sunlight and the sufficient lighting as increased my clarity to almost 100%.  And lastly, many are gauging from my videos which is not what it is like in the headset at all.  It is much smoother and faster inside the headset compared to when I use the headset to record.

It's also important to note that your eyes just get use to it.  I will admit when I first tried the pass through I was not impressed at all.  But after tweaking it and then yours eyes just getting use to it I have absolutely no issues reading anything in the pit; including my knee boards.

So all I can say is you are missing out big time.

With all respect to Korbi, I don't think he can give an honest assessment without trying it.  I am approaching almost 70 hours of AR use now and as I commented above there are tricks to make it even better.   You really need to give it a try.  Trust me you won't regret it.

@Marvin I did the same things, including the LED light overhead and I can read most gauges and most displays just fine.

The DED and the CPD are a bit of a nuisance, because of the DED's slow refresh cycles and the CPD is a bit too bright. I can fix the CPD at least.

I can confirm, that the clarity and the smoothness of the Quest 3 is absolutely flawless in my opinion.

In my case I use wireless, which is no horseshit at all, if you allow me to say that - if you have a decent setup and optimize the settings.
I don't think, that a wired connection will have a notable advantage over my wireless connection. I've bought a dedicated router (ASUS TUF GAMING AX6000) which stands next to my pit and the connection speed is more than sufficient to produce the same image as I'd have with a wired setup. It's just there for my VR headset, so there's not much traffic on it.
I use Virtual desktop with 170Mbps bandwidth and the AV1 codec - no stutters, no artifacts, just a nice smooth image. Same goes for DCS by the way.

For me, it's rather, that the image is a bit "bumpy", though when you move and it produces a warping effect on the edges.
n my case, I'll also have to tweak the mask, as the forward part of my cockpit is a couple of cm's broader than the real thing, due to a measurement error on the Center pedestal.
Anyway, I have to continuously set the image center as the view tends to "wander" a bit, and then the real cockpit and its virtual counterpart aren't aligned anymore.

To summarize: As you said, you'll have to see it for yourself (which is not a high hurdle, as you can lend VR headsets for a test ride nowadays) and you have to give the whole thing a bit of time. For me, I'll have to tweak the mask to be able to really use it without compromises.

One of the downsides is the bumpiness of the image, when I move my head. That is probably due to the fact, that the software has no means to compensate for the temporary misalignment of the real and virtual image (yet).

@Marvin What passthrough settings do you use (smoothness, similarity)?

Sneak peek,

Sorry yeah maybe a poor choice of words.  Perhaps it depends on the connection.   I had an average of 1000 mbps and it just wasn’t good enough for me.  So I went wired and really the best thing about the wire was not having to charge it as it is always on full charge.   So to each his own but we both agree it is pretty awesome and regardless of it not being Perfect it is still worth it while we wait for better headsets.

I did talk to Martin and he is looking into a frequency of our DEDs to work better with AR.

First thing is wireless is just horseshit.  To think you can run sims like we have and the graphics as wireless is pretty insane.  So running it wired has way more performance.
Seems like a few on the BMS forums and OculusQuest on Reddit would disagree.
Please let me know how you're testing and what cable you're using.  I would always welcome more performance!

I think you just need a REALLY good connection.  Flim had almost 1600 mbps and stable and he said he noticed no difference.  Mine was 1200 on a good day.  So I purchased the link cable from Meta and then use an ethernet to USBC adapter and I have never been happier.  Stable and fast and smooth and always charged.

Yes.  And with my eyes.   lol  Its very noticeable.  Wireless there is a lot of lag, and the bit rate can be slow where you see the terrain is quite blurry until the terrain loads and is in better quality.

Hey guys,

I wanted to demonstrate the potential of AR/VR with sufficient lighting and to further simulate daytime flying.  As stated above sufficient lighting in the cockpit greatly enhances the passthrough cameras to where I would argue you have about 98-99% clarity.  It might even be 100% and I just need glasses.  lol  But either way having good sufficient lighting helps.

I purchased some cheap powerful LED spot lights on amazon and mounted them to a cheap home made PVC structure frame and results are mind blowing.  Not only does it further enhance clarity, but the flood lights shining on the displays etc further prevents the LCD glowing that a camera will pick up that the naked eye does not.  I assume this is due to cameras being light sensitive.  This also enables you to turn off all cockpit lighting which does a great job of simulated daytime in the cockpit (without having that dark and lit up cockpit in a daytime environment; which is confusing on the eyes) but more importantly as I have already put 1000+ hours into my panels which are mostly from the 80/90s which helps the longevity of them.  And lets not forget the 70 amps I am running normally with all lighting on.  lol

These particular lights that come with a remote to adjust the brightness and colour.  So I have found with the pilot visor down in BMS reducing the lighting to 40% makes it blend very nicely.

Some further enhancements would be to use an arduino or something to control my lights so they can interact with the cockpit more (such as when I move the visor down the lighting auto-brightness adjusts) or even maybe one day tracking the sun position with the shared memory.  But for now static works VERY well.

And as for night time flying, well that's as easy as adjusting the brightness of your panels, lights and displays.

So again, the Quest 3 is more than suitable to implement AR.  You just have to get use to the environment and can enhance it with tips and tricks.  And of course you only have better future headsets to look forward to.  I've been using AR for almost 100 hours now and will NEVER go back to projection or monitors.

@Marvin are you using the default BMS solution of doing MR?  Or are you doing it differently with another app?

Yes.  I worked with John and we (more like HE) did a great job.  If you set up your TQS comm switch as DX secondary switch functions for enable/disable AR, VR center, VR zoom, and cockpit pilot model off an on (if you want to see the virtual knee boards) it makes for a nice setup and everything we need for AR/VR.

Great idea and great tip Marvin. Not only for AR but also to videotape the cockpit, as you said the screen glow on camera is really ugly. I'm going to copy it

The last picture with your cockpit and the sim landscape  is just amazing. Hard to believe where we have arrived for those of us who started siming in the 90s, or even before

The Somnium VR1?  Oh man!  Which one did you opt for?  Would be really interested in how this headset performs, but at 1,900EUR, it better blow the Quest 3 (£620 or 730EUR, almost 1/3rd in cost!) out of the water to justify the price!

Yes the Somnium VR1 :)
It says delivery is expected Sep-Oct.
I opted for the Ultimate Edition as it is the only one, which has MR and eyetracking.
Looking forward to take it to flight in my pit!

Is it?  When I go to the Somnium website, all I can see is the option to reserve a spot or asks me for my reservation code/email.

Whoops!  Found this
VR Flight Sim Guy

3,500EUR excluding taxes.  Oh boy.  This better blow everything out of the water!  That's about £3,000 (before taxes, so maybe £3,600) or about 5x 512GB Quest 3s!

It's the first of it's kind and produced in the EU.
I like the approach of the company, they are very open and transparent on their development and production. I hope it will delivery what it promises - I'm faithfull though, as I would not have purchased if I was not.

The only other headset which will feature a compareable (even better) hardware wil be the consumer XR4, but nobody knows when it will be actually available for the consumer market and the price will be around the same watermark.

Currently I do own the Pimax Crystal and it is a great headset, but without passthrough cameras - yet (even though they announced a faceplate with cameras, who knows if and when it will be out).
When I have my VR1 and I like what it is capable of, I will sell the Crystal.
Best regards

@kobi just keep in mind you need something which can translate a magenta color into the passthrough camera.
For Meta and some of the other headsets we use Virtual Desktop for this.

Not sure if the one you are buying has this option.

@jjbravo That's true and not true for the VR1:)
The software of the headset does provide a range of options for the use in a MR environment. You can choose from a chroma keying using colour, a box drawn with handtracking or a 3D model wich can be loaded into the software and as it seems even combinations out of this options.

When I have it in my hands I will test all these options to see which one works best for me, maybe the pink passthrough model in BMS is not even neccessary to show up in BMS but is maybe even better to be loaded right into the headsets software. We will see :)

There is nothing wrong with trying to do things on your own.  But @jjbravo did all the work for you.  Having it implemented in BMS is the perfect solution as we have key strokes that can be used to disable and enable the AR mask on the fly, this is beneficial in many ways, you can add a CFG line in your user profile so it loads as default once you enter the 3D world etc.

Not to mention the latest open XR code that was added to BMS has given me NO SHIT almost 50% performance boost.  I was thinking about a new computer soon and its not an issue for me anymore.  So in the end there is a lot of work being done by @jjbravo and other devs to get the most out of the AR/VR experience.

So anyone who is still holding out cause you somehow think the quest 3 is not performing; all I can say to that is you are missing out.  lol

At the moment, the AR mask is created for a complete cockpit, but as I am only building the centre console, there should be a way to adapt the mask - can you give me a tip?

If you look in the BMS Doc folder, there is a complete guide on how to do this and also it has all the models you can modify.

The Pico 4 Ultra is looking like a drastic improvement from their earlier models and the Quest3 and still having the compact size.  I think I will have to upgrade to one of these.

Hmm I don't know, in my opinion there is no significant difference to Quest3.
A slightly higher resolution, but smaller FOV and lower refresh rate:

I will definitely wait for the first reviews.

Thanks @Marvin for your brilliant idea of using LED spot lights for VR Mixed Reality users!!!

I have implemented in PSCockpit your idea using Smart Lights. See this post: https://www.viperpits.org/smf/index.php?topic=12898.msg200208#msg200208

Knowing that you have contacts at BMS developing team, would it be possible to implement sunrise, sunset, sun noon times and visibility in the BMS shared memory?

Regards,
Shep

I'm try to follow your tracks...   :runningdog:
From 4.37U5 change logs, Breaking Changes :
* OpenXR Toolkit will NOT work and will cause BMS to crash.
So, the only option left is steamVR. OpenXR has been reported to be faster.
What framedrop do you have ?

A wired connection to the Quest improves the streaming quality a lot. So I order an Lemorele USB-C adapter but when I plug it into the quest, nothing shows up. (the adapter is working fine on my laptop computer)
What adapter are you guys using ?

OpenXR works, it's just not using the the OpenXR Toolkit, you don't need that anymore. The developer put all the functionality into BMS for OpenXR which is why BMS will crash if you have the OpenXR Toolkit installed as well..

I use this network connector, it allows you to charge the headset at the same time:

As @jjbravo wrote the Open XR code is more updated compared to the Tool Kit so it is no longer required.  So rather than just removing the Open XR Tool kit as you will still want this for DCS just deselect BMS in the Tool kit and BMS should run fine for you.

Yes the new OPen XR code is much smoother than Steam.  Use these settings in your CFG and you should have a nice performance boost as it gave me a 35% performance boost:

set g_bVRNoPresent 1                            // No VR view on Monitor
set g_bVREnableFFR 1                            // Foveal Testing of Open XR
set g_fVRPeripheralRadiiFFR 1.10                // Recommending setting for Q3

As for your network adapter it MAY not be your adapter as some guys are discovering its the cheap amazon cables some are using.  I use the Quest Link cable which a very nice high quality cable.

@JShepherd
You can calculate this on your own ;). The only thing that is missing is the day of year, other input parameters are already available. For implementation, C code can be download here : https://midcdmz.nrel.gov/spa/

Under the Christmas tree, this morning I found the same one as jjbravo (https://a.co/d/5PTef6z) and this 100W PD : https://t.ly/Q8Nw2
With this hardware, it's running fine with the Quest3.

So the first one I ordered https://t.ly/oqJNh doesn't works properly with the Quest. There's something wrong the the PD management. It's seems it is constantly connect and disconnect.
On a laptop computer it is ok.

Hello,
Now I have the wired connection up and running.
I installed VirtualDestop in the Quest and on my laptop. When I start VirtualDestop I have my windows desktop showing in the Quest.
But when I start BMS and then enter the 3D cockpit, I still just have BMS in my desktop window.
What do I miss ?

Yesterday, I was reading about all the configurable settings in BMS ...
Maybe there is a setting in the config file that has to be set manually?

Do you have Open XR selected in the launcher? Also, select NOMOVIE
Do you have the VDXR selected in the OpenXR Runtime in the Virtual Desktop Streamer?

Here is my Falcon BMS User.cfg
Code: [Select]
set g_nVRHMD 1 // Enables the OpenVR (default 0/false).
set g_fVRZOOMFOV 60 // Field of view in degrees for VR ZOOM (default 60.0).
set g_nVRHMCSEYE 0 // HMCS renders, 0 Right eye, 1 Left eye (default 0/false).
set g_fVRResolution 1.0 // VR resolution multiplier. 1.0 by default.
set g_bVRParallelRenderThread 1 // Enable Multi-Thread optimization for VR
set g_bHdrLighting 1 // Enables the HDR lighting (default 0/true).
set g_bMixedRealityCockpitCoverEnabled 1 // Setting this will default the Mixed Reality Cockpit Cover on (1) or off (0). Can still be toggled in game.
set g_bEnvironmentMapping 0 // Performance boost
set g_bWaterEnvironmentMapping 0 // Performance boost
set g_bShadowMapping 0 // Performance boost
set g_fVRInnermostRadiiFFR 0.73
set g_fVRMiddleRadiiFFR 0.75
set g_fVRPeripheralRadiiFFR 1.10 // Recommending setting for Q3

// LAUNCHER OVERRIDES BEGIN HERE - DO NOT EDIT OR ADD BELOW THIS LINE
set g_nButtonsPerDevice 128 // SETUP OVERRIDE
set g_nHotasPinkyShiftMagnitude 0 // SETUP OVERRIDE

In the launcher, "Open XR" is selected.
Now NOMOVIE is enabled, but no changes.

The chroma key passthrought also doesn't work : I have the magenta cockpit in Quest not replaced with the Quest camera view.

Is it possible that it is related to my computer video card ? Not at home and I 'm testing with my laptop (NVidia Quadro K3000M)

Sounds like you don't have the VR Passthrough setup in Virtual Desktop for the magenta color.

Look at @Marvin video here:

I did set the magenta color for the VR passthrought and all other settings from Marvin video.

I could make a quick test on another computer with a Radeon R 200 and everything looks fine.
So it is related to this NVidia Quadro on my laptop.
Thanks for your help
