Title: Another Norwegian here
Post by: svartsau on August 08, 2021, 07:40:46 PM
Hi there, I'm here to learn from all the awesome cockpit builders before me :)

I got myself into flightsims again last year after a little break of about 20 years.
(I also have a Falcon 4.0 box somewhere, but my computer no longer has a cd-rom player  :D)

Now I'm pursuing the feeling and immersion of flying the F16, and that means VR for me. I still want a pit, and my plan is to have a simple pit that for some parts are 1:1 where it's practical for me to do so.

I have tried this with my MFD's, and it's not easy to hit small buttons without seeing your own hands, or the actual button, but I'm hoping it will get better over time. I also use TrackIR some, and have added screens to the MFDs for use with that.

My deskpit now is very half made and without plans, but it "works", and makes me play with better immersion than I did before. Now I'm looking for the way forward, and that will probably need some better planning. This is why I'm here... to get inspiration, maybe some help, and hopefully give inspiration to others looking to do something similar later.

In the mean time, I'm crashing a lot of F16's with better immersion than ever before

Welcome. That is a great start on a pit. Try to get online and fly with some other people, it is really amazing.

Thanks :)

Online multiplayer in DCS has been a bit intimidating and I have mostly played single player, but I got thrown out into MP a bit not long ago by a buddy who wanted to play and didn't care if we messed up. It was so much more fun. I'm using the time between pit-upgrades to really learn the F16 now so that I can be a bit more effective in multiplayer.

I do miss a "build tutorial" kind of page here on viperpits. Maybe it exist, but I didn't see it. A place to see lists of different ways you can take things... what plans exists, and where to start with all the things needed if you want to build a pit. It doesn't need to have it all.. just send people in the correct direction for different things. Have been reading some of the build threads which are really good. The information is just so shattered all over the place. It takes a lot of time to get an overview for a newbie like me.

Technically impossible, unfortunately! You see, most everyone has their own techniques on building, so variations are countless. You might have all the money in the world and buy everything you need ready, or you could be building everything completely from scratch!
You could engage various parts  from various plans, use electronics subsystems from different suppliers, etc etc.
If you plan on building an ACES seat, i'd suggest Brenda's plans. It's a great start, and you could always modify it towards an outstanding desk seat, depending on your skills!  :beer2:

I understand your question. There is a lot of information on this forum. But once something is posted or uploaded, it usually disappears into the digial maze, never to be found again.

In the past I have read things on this forum which would have been so helpfull at a later moment. But at that later moment, I searched for many many hours to find it back. But the info just seems completely hidden.

At this moment I mainly use build threads by some skilled people here. Look at what they have done and their pictures. That then inspires me to do it myself. But then again, I do not nearly posses the skills like our greek friend above here has. Read his build thread and be amazed!  :hail:

Not complaining, just pointing it out :)  And maybe thinking about if I can do something to help improving it.

I have been reading a lot of the threads here. It's just a bit overwhelming, and sometimes when I find something super interesting the links doesn't work anymore x) Still in the process of deciding what I need as a minimum, how much time I can put into this, and what it will cost.   :countingmoney:

..need more reading  :reading:

Reading is the key. When I first started I was exactly where you are now. What I did was take a month and read the entire forum, every single post every article it took me a long time but it was well worth it. I bookmarked the relevant pieces that I wanted to return to but it still took a long time for it to sink in what I was taking on. So find the first thing that is interesting to you to start with and focus on that. Meanwhile keep trying to collect parts and reading articles here until it starts to make sense. There is no one specific way to do things as has been said. However, you can always ask questions here and we'll get you help, as much as you possibly could need. The guys that have already done this are always willing to share. Read all the build threads, that's where you will find the key to the different approaches and yes a lot of it is old but still relevant. Hardware has changed,  electronics and interfaces but there are still things available and as I said you can get a lot of help here.

Welcome-

There are over 140,000 posts, on nearly 6,500 topic headings on the forum.  Searching can seem difficult, but often "lost" posts are just hard to find in a search.  Veteran VP members often will remember where something was posted and can re-direct you to older posts. Unfortunately, some postings are missing photos due to photos being stored outside Viperpits (on hosting services like Photobucket) which can change their sharing policies. For this reason, we encourage uploading copies of photos directly to your Viperpits postings.

Reading individual "build threads" are often the best place to begin, as you can get a sense of how members began, and how they have gradually improved their cockpits over time. We have tried to organize and index the forum, but this isn't easy, as things get posted all over the place.

Your fellow Viperpit builders are a good source of information and advice, so don't hesitate to post questions.

Welcome to the madness that is Viperpits!

Nigel and Sandman have it spot on - I tend to find what I'm looking for in people's build threads, and bookmark the ones that give me the most information...each build thread is a "how to" unto itself, and when you start your own it will become another one!
