I wonder if the lower part with the HOBO switch fits the old cougar top part...

Zoom is like mouse
A necessity to overcome the fact that we're not flying for real

Real pilot don't look at a screen and don't interact with a mouse
when I fly for real I don't zoom
When I fly sims, I do

It's not cheating, it's a way to overcome the hardware/software limitations - just like many other things (like augmented reality)

 :)

What I do really like about this new TM stuff is the HOBO switch. Was that ever done before by another manufacturer?

...and this is why I hate AR, VR, TIR, and zoom... :reading: .  I have zero desire to fly a sim in any other manner than I would fly in RL.

I think the HOBO switch also kills visible exterior lighting too, doesn't it?

Stop reading my mind :)

I thought about that myself, and have a sneaking suspicion that it will depend on how the base end of the new grip - which now includes the arm adapter and gate stop - will mate up to the top shell of the Cougar grip...or not.  And I'm thinking not...

...I'm also wondering if the new grip will mate to a real throttle arm.  And if so, is it tough enough to stand up to being slammed around against our metal throttle plates?

I have two of these that I can use; this is actually a shot of the one I fly, taken at some point during it's installation -

https://navair-pub-sites.s3.amazonaws.com/IBAR_TOFT_017.jpg

Up and operating the presentation looks like this, as an example -

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IUTBgL8bawQ/VIMIJLERBBI/AAAAAAAAhVc/P3Z-RiJrBVA/s1600/Link_FA18_Australia_2.jpg

One is configurable as an E/F, the other is a C.  They can be flown as single ships, or in combination as a Section.  I recently flew the C model after a long stint of flying the Super, and it's like stepping out of a pickup truck and into a Corvette...but I'd still far and away prefer to fight in a Super...

Normally there would be a full-surround dome in the front and aft cockpits of the F, but to save some cost we have a three-panel 4K setup in the aft pit - which means that the aft seat has far better visuals OTW than the front, but for a full up Fleet setup the visuals are intentionally attenuated for Training, and it would be this way in both stations.  One of the other things of note is that once you get (very) busy minding the jet and your SA, you just plain don't notice the hex pattern in the OTW screens...you just do the job.  I call myself "fully immersed" at the point that I start including the mirrors in my visual scan.

Which makes the point of the example I described below - even though my "WSO" actually had the best/better visual presentation, he failed to see or tally what I saw with degraded visuals when I turned to attack.  It's not just "what" you see, it's also "how" you see...something I've learned to teach to a far greater extent than I might have figured when I began all this, and why I don't/won't use "cheats".

Or is it ??? :hail:

No, it's an actual Fleet Trainer...though they did tell me they knew of a surplus one available...and that it would arrive at my home on 18 semi trucks... :reading: .

...you're forgetting the Control Console, dozens of racks of computers, network infrastructure...not to mention that this is an "under construction" pic - it also comes with it's own "container" that sets up a dark space.  I'd guesstimate something around $5M...and that's not including all of the engineering staff that keeps it updated.

The best thing about the visuals is that I can take coords from Google Earth and bomb anything, anywhere...and have actually done that on a couple of occasions.  Let's see BMS do that... :reading: .

This goes to show how much cheaper, compact, and maintenance free these simulators will get once they start to use AR technology.

...maybe, probably not.  We do some of that sort of development too...and it's only that much more costly.  I came very close to getting to getting to fly one of these missions once just because I happened to be in the Trainer and handy, but it ended up that I was the only one that could get connected.  That was mega $$$.
