Vipergear C-MUK for TM COUGAR
« on: June 26, 2018, 08:25:30 AM »
Hi guys!

We have released the C-MUK (Cougar Midlife Upgrade Kit).
What does it do?
It replaces the old potentiometers in your TM Cougar with Hall Sensors.

This has mulptiple advantages over the old potentiometers;
- Higher accuracy of your Cougar axis
- Non friction system so no wear and tear on the sensors

The kit comes pre-assembled and fits right into your cougar.
No added soldering required except in some older version of the throttle printed circuit board, which hold a single resistor that needs to be bridged using a small piece of electrical wire.

TM does not longer provide replacement parts for this amazing HOTAS and the expected lifespan of the TM Cougar potentionmeters is slowly running out..

In order to keep you guys flying this great HOTAS we have designed and built the C-MUK.

The kit is supplied in three options:
-Full Kit (stick and throttle)
-Stick Kit (X and Y sensors)
-Throttle Kit (Z sensor)

Please take a look at our facebook page for further details

I think a better name would be "Cougar MLU Kit" or "Cougar HOTAS MLU Kit".  C-MUK doesn't say anything to most folks (it certainly didn't to me) and we have to research to find out what you are talking about.

On the other hand, "Cougar MLU Kit" or "Cougar HOTAS MLU Kit" are pretty straightforward names.  We all know what:
  • "Cougar" (or "Cougar HOTAS") means
    and
  • MLU (Mid-Life Update) means

As soon as you say we offer a "Cougar HOTAS MLU Kit", it is pretty much understood by the Viperbuilder community what you are talking about.  It is then only a matter of finding out what is included in the Kit(s).

As promised;

The first pic shows one of two of the original Cougar stick potentiometers in its holder.
Next to it is the hall sensor kit That replaces it.

On the second picture is the complete set for stick and throttle.
Note the purple axis detent holder. That is done to be avle to identify the Y axis due to magnetic polarity.

Blade

Thanks very much, @87th Blade
I see it now. Very clever solution mimicing original pots.
Its installation is strait forward. Just replace one for the other and instead of the pot axis you use the mimic shape with the magnet.
This is the kind of mod I like: simple, just replacing and better specs in the end.
Great work

You are absolutely correct mrwell..

This mod is just srew out the old, put in the new!

Attached are two more pictures:
1) C-MUK Stick installed in the Cougar Stick base
2) C-MUK Throttle installed in the Cougar Throttle Base

Don't have pictures yet of the Original pots in place, but they look exactly the same but in a different color.

The pictures shows the prototype installed, for a good representation of the final product please reference the pictures in my earlier post.

Cheers,
Blade

Hi guys,

I got my kit and installed the throttle part.  Installation was pretty straightforward but after I installed it my antenna range pot is all screwy.   It seems to cycle from the 0 to 571 and back about every half second. I suspected some kind of interference with the new part so I reverted the upgrade (put the old throttle pot back in) and it still does this.

Is this something I may have broken while doing the upgrade?  Any thoughts on how I could fix it?

Thanks

Hi Andrezero

Did you unplug the flatcable from the pcb, the cable runs up to the handle.
If so please check if you placed it back properly.
The idc conector has more female pins than the pins on the pcb. It very easy to put the connector back the wrong way.

Hi Redneck,

can you please offer the C-MUK Throttle part as an individual item in your webshop?
I'd like to order it, but without the kit for the Stick.

That'd be great.

Thanks in advance,
Sneakpeek

Redneck,
I didn't unplug it but I must have bumped it.  I went back in and reseated it now it is all good.

I re-installed the upgrade and now I need to give it a test run.  When I was uninstalling the upgrade, the magnet came free.  I've stuck it back in and it seems snug enough it should stay in place.  I probably shouldn't tried pulling the nub out with metal pliers!

Thanks!
