Salaxi54's pit progress
« on: September 05, 2012, 03:59:51 PM »
Hey there fellas,
I've actually started my building process last November, but personal and family health problems have slowed things down a lot. Anyway, you have already seen my ICP construction, http://viperpits.org/smf/index.php?topic=7887.0  but i guess i shall continue in a more combined way now..
It's actually the ACES i'm working on at the moment, based on Brenda's plans (thanks for your contribution Brenda!  ) with a few alterations. You see, i decided to go the cheap way as much as possible cause things here are turning real wild on finances. I don't mean to go offtopic any more, but i just have to be low on budget, thus i opted for using all the scrap wood i have at hand.
In which case, dimensions are not always according to plans, i had to either reduce or extend some lengths/thicknesses.
There's pine, melamine, mdf and plywood all mixed up.
So, here's the ACES build so far.

As about looks, i know it's nothing special, consider though that i haven't spent a cent on lumber, but there's nothing that a bounch of putty and filling and sanding can't fix!  :D

One minor detail: there's no power tools available other than a drill and a dremel.
This means that most of what is cut is by hand saw.. Oh, and a crappy old jigsaw for some extreme curvatures.

Thanks a lot Cupra, i have been working on this ACES for a little over a month now, almost non-stop. But it's damn worth it, and keeps me distracted from daily worries a lot!

Here's where the old pc-tower cases come in handy, just like some other fellow member did a few days ago:

Here's where filling the gaps takes place. I would've usually tried some regular wood putty, but i decided to apply some 'plastic steel' on this. It actually is a 2-part epoxy for metal works.

That is a fantastic job. With the limited resources that you had, I am very impressed. Oh, and if you think skinning the seat pan was bad, wait until you skin the back.

Maybe you make a few mistakes on the road, but keep on working,at the end you can make the seat
look great with bodyfiller and paint.
So yes! i think you have build a great seat, and again great work to share al your work with us..
I know from the days i was buildingmyself that pictures mean a thousand words,....you have made
several,so its like reading a good book.
Thank you again for sharing with the forum
With friendly regards

Thanks to all of you for your nice comments, you make me blush!  :-[ LOL
I have began work on the back skinning. One thing i can tell you, if you haven't yet gone through this: don't start from the edges! Try fastening from the center outwards. That way, you can manage the metal sheet better and it will take its necessary curves easier. I understood that after doing the mistake to start from left to right... But since i have spent nothing on the aluminum (donation from a friendly neighbor), there's no reason to be sad.
Anyway, not much yet, but here she goes:

I've had some more work on skinning the back today..
As much as i realize that this skinning isn't ideal, i've been using a 'trick' which might be of help to others. In areas where the aluminum is 'stubborn' and difficult to shape, i use what i call a 'key bolt'. You might have noticed the round-headed srews i use that look like rivets. My intention is to apply epoxy on the screw heads and make them look like blind rivets. In cases where i want them to look like normal rivets, i'll slightly drill the top of the screw where the cross gap is. Anyway, as about the 'key bolts'; i pick a spot where i estimate that aluminum must be pushed further in, and use a much longer screw.

Utilizing a washer will also help not to penetrate the aluminum sheet. The wider the washer, the better. I simply didn't have the ideal washers, but what the heck..

I do not insist on pushing the bolt too much. Care needs to be taken to drag the aluminum towards the back without deforming it too much.

Salaxi54's pit progress

Once that's done, i start inserting the surrounding screws, and this gives the aluminum a little extra push.

It is rather cool that the aluminum's properties allow it to form so easily.

I use a mallet to actually bang the space between the holes, and that in itself leaves some marks on the sheet. That's why the entire surface isn't as smooth as it should.

In this picture you can clearly see the 'key bolts', their heads wider and differring from the rest of the screws in shape. They are not to be left there permanently, rather bring the sheet in position, and later replaced by the smaller screws. Yes, their diameter is thicker, so a smaller screw will not actually  fasten, but the surrounding screws are adequate to keep things in place, so i actually just put them in for aesthetics sake (using some glue in the process).

Here's another example of this ehmm 'technique':

Salaxi54's pit progress

The key bolt is circled in red, and surrounding screws in green. What i wanted to show is that once the key bolt is pushed even deeper, the surrounding screws show that there is more distance to cover. They look extended here.
This is as far as i went for today:

I intend to use epoxy where bumps and extreme deformations occur, so before this is painted, it will hopefully look a lot smoother.  ;)
