Thanks Nigel! Those compliments means a lot coming from you. I will take more pictures of the seat mounting.

The feeling of climbing for first time in your cockpit is impossible to explain!

P.S: Did you gor my PMs? I?ve been trying to contact you for a few days now.

Cheers

After a few months of hard work in the house I have earned my right for a little push in my cockpit during the summer.

I have started with something I've delaying for long out of fear to the unknown: wiring. But actually, once you start is not that hard:

Eyebrow, I have wired all four buttons because I plan to give them functions as TrackIR stuff, empty 3D cockpit etc...

Misc. panel, a hard one to wire because of the little space:

And my new love, the X-keys, they are so easy and work like a Charm. There are hundreds of very useful posts here in VP but if I have to single anyone, for me it would be Falcas' "X-keys easy way" because it really made light for me in a very obscure subject. Thanks man!

It is true that kids take away a lot of time for building the pit but they can make you enjoy aviation in a different way. Especially they can take you back to that early days where you first felt the fascination.

The Tiger Meet took place in Norway this year so I took adventage and took my boy to his first air show. He absolutely loved it and now he speaks everyday about the "planes with fire in the tail". Poor guy, what have I done to him?

Some pictures:

grtz,
Tom

They put a great show with 4 F16 flying close formation, especially beautiful was a very very low knife pass in diamond formation very close to the crowd. My kid loved it.

I kept working in the electronics. Would you believe that I have not use a soldering iron in my whole life before now? And now I make stuff which actually work! This is the part I love the most about pit building (even more than flying I would say) learning new skills.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3681.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

If you have followed my building you have seen I have the 10.4" TFT behind the CP so the rotaries are micro encoders in the instruments bezels and the wires are running "sandwhiched" between the screen and the metal front cover:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3772.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

The electronic is done and now I am going to give the "touch" printing the fixed parts of the instruments to give a more "physic" and "3D" look.

Looking good so far:

Now the laborious work of preparing the knobs (Dunk/Runfaster) based in another of those "golden posts" (for me) that we have here in Viperpits: the knob tutorial of Biohazard http://viperpits.org/smf/index.php?topic=6776.0

First we find the center:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3680.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

Second drill carefully going from 1mm to 6mm step by step. Later the two small holes for the fastening screws:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3786.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

Subtle white coat and I mask a 1mm line:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3790.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

Three coats of mate black and I mask 1mm to each said of the first line:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3808.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

Three coats gray:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3810.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

Removing the mask and three coats of transparent mate varnish, not bad looking:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3811.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

The key is to be patient, respect the drying time and accept the job will take a few days. Here the front cover is install, everything will be functional except ADI adjust and selector PNEUMO/ELECT:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/Tulkas_5Js/Cockpit/IMG_3819.jpg
Tulkas' simulator - progress

The labels for CRS/HDG HSI, SELECT INDEX and ADI arrow are made printing in adhesive paper and after placing the stickers I give a thick coat of transparent mate varnish, it protects the sticker and actually make it look like a part of the knob:

Ha,ha. Far from perfect but good enough.

I bought one of these just for the knobs sake

I don't think there is a chance to get it right with a hand held driller.

Tulkas-

Nice posting (with great photos of your work!).  These types of updates always inspire me... guess I need to get busy creating my own build thread soon.  Thanks for sharing your work here.
